World Cup 2010: Is it OK to the support Germans?
5/07/2010
They've rocked the world with their swashbuckling, creative (dare we say un-Germanlike) football. They have put four past Australia, England and Argentina in their rampant march to the World Cup semi-finals. So today we quietly ask: Is it now acceptable to start rooting for England's old foe? Can we actually support the Germans?
Ja Says Mirror's Derek McGovern
Everyone knows you never write the Germans off - unless it's at Eurovision - so their presence in the World Cup semi-final should come as no surprise.
What does come as a surprise is their metamorphosis from hated foe to everyone's favourite "other" team.
At Euro 96, when they knocked us out on penalties, their squad included names like Kahn, Freund, Eilts, Reck, Strunz, and Kuntz.
They were not so much names as Panzer commands.
When the commentator read out the line-up before kick-off I swear air-raid sirens sounded.
Now they have Lahm, Khedira, Gomez, and Klose. Softer names. Almost fluffy - and that's remarkable for a nation that has no word for fluffy.
For years we've poured scorn on their humour, and until recently rightly so.
But Jurgen Klinsmann demonstrated during his time in the Premier League that inside a German there might be a funny man trying to get out, and in Port Elizabeth a week ago they took the mickey out of us good and proper.
Their football was a breath of fresh herr, as was their reaction to the Frank Lampard controversy.
During the war the Allies dreamed up the man that never was; Germany hit back with the goal that never was.
But there was no mocking, like we'd have mocked them.
No taunting, like we'd have taunted them. No declaring war, which was bloody unbelievable.
They just said the goal should have stood, bad luck chaps, and got on with taping Eurotrash.
Elsewhere in this paper today sports columnist Stan Collymore urges England to follow the German model.
I'm not sure that's good advice. I did it once and she took out a restraining order. But you understand where he's coming from.
What has sealed a German place in our hearts above all, though, is Saturday's result in Cape Town: Argentina 0 Germany 4.
Not only did they beat the hated Argies but they did so by a margin that made our pitiful display against them six days earlier look a little more acceptable.
I never thought I'd say this while sober but "Come on you Germans."
